Well i have a 5 gallon take and there is 2 goldfish. i know im not supposed to have 2 goldfish in a 5 gallon tank but whatever. Anyways, we have this one play toy/statue in the tank and its a dolphin with coral reefs etc. I just got the goldfish last sunday, everything is all new to me. I'm not sure whether its a boy or girl. The orange one always goes behind the statue and stays there, the other one which is a white one is across the tank watching the other one. They keep doing that. At other times wherever the orange one goes the white one goes. They are following each other every second! Then sometimes the white ones goes there for a while and the orange watches. Then at other times they both go over there and do something. What is going on between those 2? Did one lay eggs or something..? If so when will it hatch? Also im seing these strings come out of them what is that? Thanks!
Pytanie #6:
ok, for a reef tank.
I hadnt thought of doing it till a couple of days ago, and if everything goes right the cycling for the main tank should be done today.
So I was wondering, once the main tank is cycled and everything is good... can I just take out water and put it in another tank? I can take out the water that would of been used for a water change or something.
Would I have to cycle it again though? Like... if its already cycled water can i just put it in the other tank? Or will I have to wait 4 weeks? And I know I need a filter, but will I need a skimmer too? I will be getting inverts (starfish) will I need to put them in the quarantine tank too?
I was also thinking of getting a 10 gallon quarantine tank. Is that too small? Too big? (the tank would be for fish like the clarkii clown, coral beauty angelfish, blue damselfish.....)
thanks sorry for all my questions.
*sorry I dont know why I put that the cycling should be done today, it should be done by the end of the week.

It's about an enchanting experience I had during summer vacation:
This summer, my family and I spent a week of July in the quaint sea side town of Ningaloo, located in the western extremes of Australia.
One day, a scuba diving session was scheduled for our family. Looking at the calm, cerulean blue surface one wouldn’t expect to see something stupendous underneath it but all my incredulity vanished as the flurry of bubbles which shrouded my vision as a result of diving into the water cleared and revealed to me a colourful underwater metropolis of coral.
I tried to exclaim “wow” but what came instead were a few bubbles through my diving mask as I saw the eerie brain coral, the peculiar table coral and the rainbow of colours which painted these underwater marvels making them look astonishingly beautiful. The striped clownfish, the colour changing cuttlefish, the Yellow Tangs and the little damsel fish increased the beauty tenfold.
All of a sudden, a huge figure loomed up from behind the reef from which I was plucking samples. It was at least 12 metres long and had a black body which was striped and spotted with pale blue. I immediately recognised it as a whale shark and didn’t panic as whale sharks are known to be very docile creatures. The titan serenely floated over to me and gave me a playful nudge. I realised it was a friendly creature so I grabbed onto a fin gently and to my surprise the creature began to swim, pulling me along for a ride. I mounted onto its back, holding onto its fin for support. It was like riding a horse except much more exciting. The shark began to move up and down, twisted its body and swam in loop de loops with such speed it was like an underwater roller coaster! Before I knew it the shark began to swim towards the surface and it actually leaped into the air like a dolphin. It was truly an enchanting experience with the salty sea wind in my hair, a beautiful sunset and riding my new friend (whom I incidentally named _____)!
See the "_____" well I can't think of a name for the whale shark. Any suggestions please? (But not Shamu...)

In my old house my father used to have a very large salt water marine tank, with coral fish and sea anemones. Since we moved many years ago we never set up the fist tank again, and now that I have moved to college I want to start my own fish tank. I realize with the maximum fish tank size of only 20 gallons I can not support a full marine tank with fish, but I was wondering if I could support a tank of just coral, brightly colored to give my room some color and decoration? The only way I could do this is if it is easy to maintain... Please be honest, I would hate to take on a project that is not attainable. Thank you very much

Well, I spent w/my gf in the Philippines only 52 days but my budget is small so I must make plans for farther future. In Oct 2010 Im gonna go to her for almost 6 months. On the end if all is OK between us, Im gonna marry her n to start asking abt a 13A visa in BI. Now she lives in N. Caloocan which is very contaminated place, not safe n far from good places to relax for weekends. In this way I decided to move w/her to another place to rent n then to buy a condominium.
So far I could find out that Batangas is a good place for living (hopefully to foreigner too). It is not so far from NCR where my gf has her older parents n siblings. Batangas is the biggest city south from Manila taking such a distance around. It is good for medical care (I have glaucoma e.g.), schools (my gf has 6 yo child) n other big city facilities. Maybe 5 km from the center I think there is a beach good for going on weekends (I like swimming). It is protected water area coz of coral reefs so it is a chance it won't be contaminated. Of course, it is a big harbour too, so we could hv a business trading fish e.g. What I don't know is abt prices there, especially of livelihood n of condos there. Second is abt the aspect of safety which is important for me too.
Can I ask U - are there good alternate places for living for the foreigner close to Manila? If there r other good places I would like to find out abt them too. Of course I don't think abt places like Tagaytay which is very expensive for hving a condo n living.

Hi!
We watched a short movie on scientists researching a coral reef. We have to do a worksheet with it and I have a question.....
>>Based on the video, what are 6 levels at which biology can be studied? <<
[I know you didn't watch it, but basically there were marine biologists(I think, or some other type of scientists) and they went into the ocean and were looking at coral reefs. ]
Also...
How can you use satellites in studying coral reefs?
I think the answer is to take pictures of the coral reefs from the sky so they could be mapped...
Why do marine biologists study the chemical compostion of the seawater?
That's all! Thank you!!

Also, if someone knows any information on dating the age of Coral reefs, geologic formations in the ocean, fossils, etc. I'd like hear it and where they got their information from.

I'm just posting up here for ideas really!
I have a 10months well established nano reef - 20gallons with 5 gallon internal sump, T5 lighting system with cooler fans and splash shield, stock filter with added phosex, carbon, bioballs and ammolock, additional powerhead - 3000l/h, tank kept at 26-30 degrees celcius (it get's hot during the day)
In the tank I have two ocellaris clowns - breeding pair, female is 3 inches, male is 1 inch, a royal dottyback - 3 and a half inch female and a scarlet damselfish - 4.5 inches long, 4 inches in diameter.
So I will be trading this damsel, she has just gotten way too big for the tank, the clowns and dottyback are not expected to grow much more.
So should I just get another damsel to replce my large female, or should I go for something different?
The dottyback is quite territorial and she will guard her area fiercely, so keep that in mind. The clowns are breeding, so the female gets quite aggressive too.
Inside the tank is also two female pacific cleaner shrimp, 3 snails, 3 scarlet reef hermits, a sand sifting starfish, a peppermint shrimp and corals - small polyp zoanthids, Xenia, mushrooms, feather duster
Tank also has a fair amount of amphipods, copepods and worms, so I can sustain more picky eaters.
So any ideas?
Thanks immat, I do ahve to say that Ocellate damsel is absolutly amazing! I had a yellowtail before, unfortunatly she died to ammonia poisioning during an unfortunate spike 7 months ago.
I was considering something like the midas blenny, he does need a 30gallon, but chances are I'll have a larger tank soon! (Looking into getting a 4 foot), I had a bicolour who died of stress, due to having to move tanks two days in a row (two leaky tanks in two days, was a long week), I'm avoiding bicolour fish however due to the dottyback taking adversary to them!
I may look into a blenny/goby type however, I would just be worried about them getting too close to the dottybacks territory, she's known to fin nip, that being said, she has calmed down immensly in the past two months.

even though we creatures are different, we all get along.
we respect eachother, we help eachother, and
we work together to make our place a better place.
everything down here is bursting with colour too bright

everyone is friends.
everyday is a new day, a new start, when the

the beauty of my reef sends everyone crazy in
awe, nothing else matters when we begin to enjoy
the beauty and tranquility of this underwater and
under-rated heaven. ,they blow bubbles upto the surface,
watching as their oxygen,
dissapears above them along with their troubles and
glistens in the sunlight which shines down onto the
water, a blessing it gives..
we dont live forever, and we enjoy every single day as
it comes.
i thank god for making

I was gone for a month for vacation and i left my mom directions to take care of my saltwater tank. she did everything that i told her to do but i forgot to mention to add more water as it evaporated. so the salinity went really high. everything seemed fine though except my Xenia was not doing so good.
What i think happened is as the water level lowered the power head was sucking up air and it fell, so she re-stuck it on the wall. i had my power head at the top of the tank, when i got home it was on the middle of the wall. the current was then hitting the Xenia directly, and its not that big. another factor could be that it got really hot here and heated up my tank. nothing else was harmed though. i got some Reef Plus a while back to get it to grow faster, but it hasn't grown at all since iv got it(about 3 months). due to the direct current it shrunk some and now it doesn't really move, and it barely retracts when the light is off. also the tips are turning white and on some of them the pulsing part is gone. it also sometimes turns a darker purple color in the middle of the day. i don't know what to do. right now iv done a water change to fix the salinity and stuff but other than that I'm stumped. And also all my levels are fine. i need some real help. thanks.

One of the really cool things about climate science is the fact that much of the data are actually available to the public. NOAA has an extensive library of paleoclimatology data. Among the data sets available for download is this one:
Great Barrier Reef Coral Growth Data
If you calculate an average calciifaction rate for the 60 reef cores, you can easily see that the annual calcification rate has increased from about 1.2 g/cm2/yr in 1580 to a modern day rate of about 1.7 g/cm2/yr.
Why has the calcification rate steadily grown over the last 430 years?
A) Coral reefs like global warming.
B) Coral reefs like a rising sea level.
C) Coral reefs like a CO2 fertilization.
D) Coral reefs like ocean acidification.

E) I don't believe the data because the "scientific consensus" says that all of the above are destroying coral reefs.

I am planning a trip to disney world this june with my husband, brother(13) sister(21) and mother in law. Me and my husband went this past march for our honeymoon. Best 4 days ever! We had got the dining plan with 1table service, 1 quick service and 1 snack. Just enough food anymore would have been to much. I booked the trip last minute so I was trying to get reservations anywhere I could. It was our first time at disney world so we happy to eat Almost anywhere. We ate at the sci-fi the first night we didn't have reservations but it was a 9 pm we didn't wait to long. When we sat down I loved it! So cute! Food was pretty good I got the ribs he ordered steak.
Then at the magic kingdom we ate at the crystal palace for lunch at 1. Lots of people! We had reservations didn't wait no longer than 10 minutes. Nice and pretty on the inside. Oh and whe they sat us down there were little tiny mickey confetti in a shape of an heart. That was sweet.Pooh and tigger and eyore kicked butt! They even gave us a card that said congradulations and was signed my pooh and everyone. This was the only character meal I could get. The food was good but I'm hard to please when it comes to buffets. The fat inside of me loves buffets cuz I can eat all I want but they never taste that great.
The last place we ate was at the coral reef at epcot. Not a big seafood eater but I heard about eating next to fishes and that sounded pretty cool. Our reservation was at 3. Weird tiime but that's all I could get. they sat us right next to the tank. So kool! Nice atmoshere. But of course we ordered steaks. Yuummy. Dessert was great! He got some chocolate cake with some weird stuff in the middle it was good. I got almond ice cream and it had like a rice crispie treat but made from almonds. Super yummy!
This time I would like to know on how to make it worth every penny. I don't like buffets too much but how's ohana and boma and chef mickey? Or the german buffet in epcot? What's better breakfast lunch or dinner? I also heard at some resterruants u can save ur dessert and get at a diffrent resteruant is that true? What about quick service are they all the same?? Our breakfast was always the same what about in the parks is there any quick service that are better then other? And bakerys are they considered snacks or quick service?
I would love to hear y'alls advice

I have posted this in a few different categories as there are not any that pertain exactly to what I am asking, as well as to hopefully target people involved in similar fields of work. It comes from my desire to be a marine biologist. To put it simply, I didn't focus enough in school to get to where I wanted to be, I didn't care about my future as a teenager, So to become a marine biologist now, is unlikely.
I'm currently working as a carpenter for my father's business, and desire to find a career i'd enjoy. I am aware that becoming certified in SCUBA, as well as learning to use a rebreather, is a must. What I don't know, is what classes are necessary to start filming under water? I'd be interested it both video, and photography work, with any marine life from coral reefs to mammals, and fish, from tropical colorful fish to sharks. I am a fairly strong swimmer, and have some snorkel experience, as well as boat operation. So I am curious on how to obtain the proper credentials to be an underwater cameraman, as well as how to break into the field (who hires them, how to get involved)
I don't expect to get rich off this, it's more of a desire to do something I would love to do, versus spending my life chasing money. Money is important regardless, but before I get too old and get stuck doing something I don't enjoy solely for the money, I'd like to get on a path of an enjoyable career while I'm still young. I am 22, didn't do all that well in school, not because I'm not smart, but because I didn't apply myself, I didn't care. So my record won't get me into any fantastic colleges, but I am willing to climb the ladder to achieve my goal. At this point i'd be happy to apprentice on a boat cutting up bait, or doing deck hand work, but not just anyone can pick up a camera and know what they are doing, so I'm sure schooling is required. But as far as I know, most photography courses at community colleges near me don't offer anything on photography under water. Anyone with any ideas, or hopefully, any experience in the field I am interested in? How does someone like me get involved? Thank you for your help.

But as I was working on my friend, a conversation with someone I can't remember meeting bubbled up in my mind. She either was or posed as a nurse or doctor (medical professional) and we didn't even talk about treating injuries, but think of this woman somehow guided my hands in helping my friend.

About two weeks ago, I bought a 40-gallon aquarium that came with a working hang-on-the-back filter, heater, ornaments and gravel. The gravel is pretty coarse: about 1/2"-diameter polished rocks.
I set up a decent fish tank for a while, with many fake plants and cute ornaments, and let it sit for a week. Then I bought six guppies: two males, four females. The day after that, two females died.
I was worried about my future guppy tank, but after doing some intensive research, I decided that I should have made a Cichlid tank to take advantage of how much my aquarium can hold.
I read that guppies were good for starting the cycle for a Cichlid tank, though, so I was happy I had still made that decision, even if it was for another reason.
I changed the decorations in my tank with the guppies still in it, so now I have a good Cichlid tank layout, with many rocks, that are stacked or formed into little caves or crevices. I have one fake plant behind the rocks in each corner.
However, I really want to make this Cichlid tank as perfect as possible, so I have a decent amount of issues:
-My current tank is 40-gallon, the temperature is 79-80 degrees, and the pH is 7.6
1. I am aware that the pH needs to be raised to 8.0-8.2, but I don't know the best way to do that safely without harming my guppies or anything. Also, the guppies can't really handle a pH that high, so when would be a good time to do it?
2. The guppies have been in for 2 days now. How long should I wait until the tank is fully cycled?
3. I fear that my gravel is much too coarse for Cichlids, who like to dig around alot. I want to buy a new substrate, preferably sand, but I really don't want to take out all the gravel on the bottom and then pour sand into the water to have it float around and cloud the water with fish in it. Would it be possible to put sand on the gravel? I don't have eggcrate on the bottom, but I feel like the coarse gravel supports the rocks well and protects the acrylic from them.
4. To raise my pH naturally, should I buy Aragonite sand, reef sand, etc.? What would be something that I could most likely put on my gravel and would raise the pH to about 8.0-8.2? I also have some dried coral, but I don't know if it will manage to raise the pH enough and then buffer it. If pH-raising sand is the better idea, please post a link or something on the Petco or Petsmart website (so that I can easily go buy it at the store. Also, note that I don't buy my fish at Petco, I go to a LFS).
5. What would I do with my guppies when my Cichlid environment is completely ready? Are they likely to get eaten, or could they co-exist with the first pair I put in? (They almost always hang at the top of the tank)
6. Is my filtration sufficient? I would like to spend as little as possible, but if better or additional filtration is necessary, please let me know.
I'm sorry for the long and horrifyingly specific questions, but I've had a lot of problems with fish tanks, and this is my first one with bigger fish, so I'm not ready to cut any corners anymore. Any help with any of these questions is truly and deeply appreciated- Thank you in advance!
If more filtration is necessary, I probably would need something inside the tank, since 2 hang-on-the-back filters seems excessive.
Forgot to specify- I'm going to get African Cichlids: most likely lake Malawi ones.
Kenyi fish are what I'm aiming for as a start, followed by anything that can eventually accompany it and give color diversity in the tank. I haven't managed to find a compatibility chart, list or anything that can tell me compatible species of lake Malawi fish that will live in harmony.
My understanding is that most Mbuna fish are able to live together, if the ratio of females to males is at least 4 to 1, and if the males are of different species and color than each other.
If I'm wrong, then I'll ask a question about Mbune compatibility.

Pytanie #48:
I plan on setting up a 55 gallon reef tank with an 20 gallon sump and I want to make sure that ALL of the fish I plan to keep are reef safe. I want a like 99.9% chance that the fish WON'T eat the corals/shrimp. You may have already guessed, but I had a problem with this before. And, although it may surprise you, an ALGAE BLENNY attacked a butterfly fish, ate a peppermint shrimp, ripped off a blue chromis tail fin, and munched on my zoas. : / So, heres my stocking list:
- 1 Yellow Tang
- 1 Midas Blenny
- 2 Percula Clowns
- 1 Lamarck's Angelfish
I think that this is too many fish but I'm not 100% percent sure. Which is why I'm asking you guys.
So please let me know if this is too many fish, if they are reef safe, and are any of the fish too big for my tank.

Ok so i have a saltwater aquarium,29 gallons, with A tomato Clownfish ,Royal Gramma,a feather duster, watchman goby with pistol shrimp, hermits, and two conchs.Anyways I love it and all,but i also want to turn into a Nano Reef.I all ready have a standard power head that produces 170 ghs.I heard that i would need more power heads and i was wondering if the Hydor Koralia would be ok.Also I mainly want to do soft corals so would the Aquasun light fixture Zoomed work? It's hard to find T-5 lights that are 30" :) thank you.
Pytanie #50:
i want a community tank, no live rock and no corals. just fish and some decor. i only want fish that can grow to a max of 5 or 6 inches but around 3 inches would be ideal. also some inverts that dont need a reef setup if someone could list all these things that would be helpful... thanks for the help
